Joshua has not walked at all. Would barely free stand except if you "encouraged" him to. All of the sudden in his Halloween costume with Grammy, Grampa, Mommy and Daddy watching and camera rolling, for no aparent reason he rattled off 10 steps.
At the end, because we were only trying to free stand, everyone burst into cheers, and Joshua burst into tears ;(
But he tried again... and again... and again!

Schulte Family Update // Oct 2008
This is an email that is sent out to many friends and family... feel free to drop me an email and I'll sign you up: mschulte@casaviva.org

Friends, and Family,
Kristin and I are very excited to be leaving for Costa Rica on Sunday.
We will be in Costa Rica for 10 days. During that time we'll have the
opportunity to
meet Casa Viva families and children, many of whom we already know.
(Although we have placed 7 new children in the last 2 weeks!)
meet with co-workers and to create a plan for the next year of
ministry as we look to expand into Bolivia and Peru.
develop a plan to most effectively fund Casa Viva Costa Rica.
Please keep us (and Joshua too as he comes with us) in your prayers.
Family Loss
In case you didn't know this past month we faced a tradgedy as we lost
the life of an unborn child. We invite you to read a blog post about

Connecting Children with Families
[http://cts.vresp.com/c/?CasaVivaNFP/f0b928d715/TEST/7cdf9318d4/id=5]
At Casa Viva we talk about "connection" every day. Connecting children
to family is the heart of our work. We believe one of a child's most
important needs is a need to connect to "life" - families, friends at
church, neighbors in their community.

Casa Viva // Autumn Newsletter
The latest Casa Viva newsletter should be hitting your mailbox this week! If you want a sneak peak of the newsletter you can download the Autumn 2008 Welcome Home.
In it you'll find a great article by Jill Aspegren on the importance of connecting children to families and communities. Lack of connection is one of the biggest faults of orphanages and institutions.
When Children turn 18 they are shown the door in institutional settings, whereas at Casa Viva children develop connections with extended family members, church communities, brothers and sisters. They have a place to go home to celebrate Christmas the rest of their life, they have an uncle who owns a tienda down the street that might give them a job.

My Sweet New Shoe
As many of you know Kristin and I trained for a half marathon that ended up being on the rainiest weekend in Chicago history.
I have now unofficially named it the "Half-Monsoonathon".
Any way after running the race I ran 2 more times and then began having foot pain. Yesterday I went to the doctor and she says I have a stress fracture in my left foot. So she gave me this sweet new shoe to wear for 2 weeks on my left foot. Evidentally you too can buy one online for only $12. (I think mine with the 3 xrays and a doctors visit cost a LITTLE more than than.)
