Comparing US vs Latin America // Child Abuse
I do not know how many of you get the newspaper... my wife will tell you I am one of few people my age who read it on a regular basis. But one thing struck me yesterday. On one page of yesterday's Chicago Tribune three of the attached four articles were on the same page.
One question I get a lot is, "Why aren't you working here in the US? There are children in horrible circumstances down the street, facing physical and sexual abuse, negelect, etc."
This is a tough question because it is true children are suffering around the world. For the most part here in the United States these children have advocates fighting for them: teachers report physical abuse, police respond to domestic violence, local governments have taken a stand for children. On the other hand in developing countries the cries of these children often go unheard.
As an example of this it is reported that 80,000 babies die of physical abuse in Latin America and has a population of 569 million. 80,000!
It is estimated that similar deaths in the US total 1,200 (population 304 million).

All-church Initiative // Father to the Fatherless
Casa Viva is launching a new center this year in Grecia, Costa Rica! We have already begun laying the foundations to this new center. There is a coordinator working in Grecia to recruit churches who have a heart for the fatherless in their community.
In order to launch this new center we are looking for sister churches in America.
A sister church in the United States would launch an all-church initiative to teach church members about God's heart for the fatherless. Over 5 years they would:
-send mission trips
-build relationships
-educate their congregation through week long missions conference
-provide seed monies
-teach about the father less on Sunday mornings, in small groups, children's ministry etc.
At the end of 5 years the Casa Viva center will be self-sustaining relying primarily on in-country funds to maintain it's operation.

Chicago on the Cheap
Hey if you are looking for fun, free things to do in Chicago... here are some ideas.
I took Olman downtown today and we wanted to do it on the cheap, but experience some great things.
1 // Adler Planetarium View
We did not go in the planetarium, as it was 7 am. But from the Adler planetarium you can get a GREAT view of the city. It was a bit of a snowy day and you can see that part of Lake Michigan was frozen, but great view... we have seen many wedding parties having photos taken out here before.
2 // Millenium Park
This park is always a hit. the great big bean gives a good view of the city. You can also ice skate in the winter and see other interesting pieces of architecture.
3 // Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
There is a great little FREE museum at the Fed Reserve... as a matter of fact they pay you to come... I walked out with $364 in cash!!! (Okay so the money was shredded...)

4 // John Hancock Signature Lounge
Hands down the best way to see Chicago on the cheap is to visit the John Hancock Signature Lounge. Rather than paying to go to the visitor's deck... Go to the lounge on the 96th floor (2 floors above the observation deck) and order a drink. Drinks are a bit expensive, but cheaper than paying to go to the observation deck. They also have good appetizers, snacks and desserts.

Presidential Candidates on Orphan Crisis
I don't know how many of you caught the presidential candidates being interviewed by Rick Warren. I personally didn't have the time to sit down and watch it for two hours (I was watching the Olympics).
But I heard afterwards that Rick Warren asked both of them to consider making the orphan crisis their big social contribution to the world, Like Bush made AIDS in Africa his.Rick Warren states that there are 148 orphaned children in the world and asks what their solutions might be.
McCain (who has an adopted daughter) says he'd like to make adoptions more possible for Americans. While this is a great solution for the individual children being adopted there are 148 million children in need and only 110 million households in America! Adoption cannot be the only solution.
Rick Warren correctly states that orphanages and institutions are not the best place for orphans to be raised that families are. Orphanages cannot be the only solution.
Casa Viva is creating an alternative solution to orphanages and institutions that empowers national churches to be a solution for orphans in their own country. I am excited to be a part of this alternative solution to the 148 million orphans in the world.

First I'd like to say "Thank You" for your continued support as I serve here at LeaderTreks.
This Friday I will be moving into a new position here at LeaderTreks. I will no longer oversee the Youth Pastor Resources part of LeaderTreks, but will instead work full time with a program called Casa Viva. Casa Viva is a program funded through LT, and based in Costa Rica.
Casa Viva has taken a whole new look at international child care. They have asked several questions:
1. How can get children into Christian homes instead of institutionalizing them?
2. How can international child care not be dependent on American dollars?
3. How can we better care for the children intrusted to us?
While these answers have become more and more clear, they have more and more people interested in applying the Casa Viva program in other countries. That's where I come in: to help mobilize, fund, and equip other Casa Viva sites to open up! What an exciting opportunity.
